How to Take NMN: Timing, Dose and Protocol for Best Results

NMN works best when taken correctly — not because the timing window is narrow, but because a consistent, well-designed protocol produces reliably better outcomes than sporadic or poorly-timed supplementation. Here's the complete guide, based on clinical evidence and the protocols used by the researchers who study NMN most closely.

When to Take NMN: Morning Is Best

Take NMN in the morning — ideally within the first hour of waking, before or alongside your first meal.

The reason is circadian biology. NAD+ plays a central role in regulating your circadian clock via the SIRT1 pathway. Your body's natural NAD+ production peaks in the morning and declines through the day. Morning supplementation aligns with and amplifies this natural rhythm, rather than working against it.

Andrew Huberman's protocol is specific: he takes NMN within 1–2 hours of waking, at least 30 minutes before his first meal. David Sinclair takes NMN with his morning yogurt. Both protocols are consistent with morning timing.

Taking NMN in the evening is not harmful, but some people find it mildly stimulating — which can affect recovery and overnight routine. For this reason, morning is the standard recommendation.

Before or After Food?

NMN can be taken on an empty stomach or with a light meal. The evidence suggests:

  • Empty stomach: Faster absorption. Preferred if you want to maximise the morning energy effect
  • With a small meal or yogurt: Better tolerated if you have a sensitive stomach. David Sinclair takes NMN with yogurt, and research suggests fat may improve the absorption of some co-ingested compounds like Resveratrol

If you're taking NMN Plus (which contains Trans-Resveratrol), taking it with a meal containing a small amount of fat slightly improves Resveratrol bioavailability.

What Dose?

Ages 30–45: 500mg daily — one capsule of NMN Pure or NMN Plus

Ages 45–55: 500mg daily, consider increasing to 750mg after 4–6 weeks if energy improvements plateau

Ages 55+: 500–1,000mg daily. The larger NAD+ deficit typically warrants a higher dose

These are starting points. Individual response varies. Track your energy levels, recovery and overnight routine and exercise recovery over the first 8 weeks before adjusting dose.

How Long Until It Works?

NAD+ levels begin rising within hours of your first dose. Subjective effects — improved energy, better overnight recovery, faster recovery — typically appear within 2–4 weeks of consistent daily use. Metabolic changes take 8–12 weeks. The cumulative longevity-associated benefits are long-term.

The key word is consistent. Huberman has noted that the energy benefits of NMN are reproducible — they appear when he takes it and reduce when he stops. This is not placebo; it's a reliable signal that consistent daily use is what produces the effect.
