Shilajit Supplement UK

Shilajit — the mineral-rich Himalayan resin used in Ayurvedic medicine for over a millennium — has accumulated a credible published research base over the past two decades, but no authorised UK health claims. This guide describes what published research has examined for shilajit and the other ingredients in our doctor-designed Shilajit Complex, what the evidence does and doesn't show, and how to think about adaptogens within UK supplement regulation.

What Shilajit Actually Is

Shilajit is a thick, mineral-rich resin that forms over centuries as organic plant matter decomposes under the pressure of Himalayan rock. It contains a complex mixture of compounds — most notably fulvic acid and a wide range of trace minerals — and has been documented in Ayurvedic medicine texts dating back over a thousand years.

In the last two decades, published research has examined shilajit in randomised controlled trials. The best-known of these is a 2015 double-blind RCT in healthy men published in Andrologia (Pandit et al., 2015), which examined the effects of 90 days of purified shilajit supplementation on various endpoints in healthy male volunteers. Other published research has examined shilajit in cellular and animal models, with various endpoints.

Important: shilajit has no authorised UK health claims on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register. This page describes the ingredient factually and refers to what the published research examines. We do not make health benefit claims for shilajit.

The Quality Problem — Why Source Matters

Shilajit quality varies enormously across the market. The traditional Himalayan source — at altitude, slowly decomposed, properly purified — is rare and expensive. Cheaper shilajit products can contain heavy-metal contamination (lead, arsenic, mercury), adulterants, or low-quality resin from non-traditional sources.

If you're buying shilajit in the UK, look for:

  • Purified Himalayan source — sometimes called "purified shilajit" or specified by altitude band.
  • Independent heavy-metal testing — the Certificate of Analysis should explicitly show lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium results within recognised safety limits.
  • Standardised fulvic acid content — fulvic acid is one of the principal characterised constituents of shilajit. Standardisation gives some confidence in batch-to-batch consistency.
  • UK-based brand with a clear regulatory chain of custody.

Our Shilajit Complex uses purified Himalayan shilajit, third-party tested for heavy metals on every batch.

Why a Complex Formula Rather Than Plain Shilajit

Our Shilajit Complex pairs Himalayan Shilajit with four further botanical ingredients, each with its own published research base. Each is described factually below — none of these ingredients has authorised UK health claims, and we do not make health benefit claims for them.

Himalayan Shilajit

Purified resin, standardised for fulvic acid content. Published RCTs have examined its effects on various outcomes; the most-cited is the 2015 trial referenced above. For our full evidence review see What is Shilajit? Benefits, Evidence and How to Take It.

Lion's Mane Mushroom (Hericium erinaceus)

A culinary and medicinal mushroom with a published research base examining its effects on Nerve Growth Factor pathways in laboratory settings and a small number of human trials. Lion's Mane has no authorised UK claim. For our evidence summary see Lion's Mane: Evidence and How to Take It.

Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum)

A traditional Asian medicinal mushroom with a published research base. Reishi has no authorised UK claim.

Ashwagandha (KSM-66)

KSM-66 is the most clinically studied form of ashwagandha extract. Multiple published RCTs have examined its effects on stress-related markers in human subjects. Ashwagandha has no authorised UK claim.

Maca Root (Lepidium meyenii)

A traditional Peruvian root with a published research base. Maca has no authorised UK claim.

The Active Ingredients in Our Formula

  • Purified Himalayan Shilajit
  • Lion's Mane Mushroom extract
  • Reishi Mushroom extract
  • Ashwagandha (KSM-66)
  • Maca Root extract

Suggested Use

2 capsules daily, in the morning with food. The published research on adaptogens generally examines extended dosing periods (typically 8–12 weeks or longer); occasional dosing is unlikely to reflect what the trials examine.

Shilajit Complex pairs naturally with NMN Plus in a morning routine — the two products contain entirely different ingredients with different research bases. Both are bundled in our Vital Energy Trio alongside Magnesium Glycinate, our most popular daily stack at £44.99.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is shilajit safe?

Purified shilajit from a reputable, heavy-metal-tested source is generally well-tolerated in adults. The principal safety concern with shilajit is heavy-metal contamination from poorly-sourced or unpurified product — which is why third-party testing on every batch matters. Not recommended for under-18s, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or alongside certain medications without medical advice.

Can I take shilajit with NMN?

Yes — they're complementary. Different ingredients, different published research bases. Take both in the morning. Our Vital Energy Trio bundles both together.

How long until I notice anything?

The published research on shilajit examines extended dosing periods (the most-cited trial measured outcomes at 90 days). Anyone claiming acute effects in days is making a claim outside the published evidence base.

Is shilajit just for men?

The most-cited shilajit RCT (Pandit 2015) was conducted in male subjects, but the wider shilajit research base is not gender-specific. Our Shilajit Complex is formulated for any adult interested in a doctor-designed adaptogen formula.

What's the difference between shilajit and ashwagandha?

Different ingredients with different research bases. Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin; ashwagandha is the root of Withania somnifera. We include both in Shilajit Complex because their published research examines different endpoints.
