Berberine Supplement UK
Berberine has become one of the most talked-about supplements in the UK, and also one of the most poorly explained. This page sets out what berberine actually is, what the regulatory position is in Great Britain, what our formula contains, and — just as importantly — what we are not permitted to claim it does.

What Berberine Is
Berberine is a plant alkaloid found in several botanical sources, including Berberis vulgaris (barberry), Coptis chinensis (goldthread) and Hydrastis canadensis (goldenseal). It has a long history of traditional use, and it has been the subject of a substantial body of published research over the past two decades.
The form used in most supplements, including ours, is berberine hydrochloride — a salt chosen for stability and consistency of dosing.
A note on claims. Berberine has no authorised health claims on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register. That means no UK supplement company — including this one — may lawfully tell you what berberine does for your health. Any brand that does is breaking the rules. Everything we say about berberine below is factual description of the ingredient and the published literature, not a health claim. The only ingredient in this formula that carries authorised claims is chromium.
What Is in Little Ox Berberine Complex
-
1200mg berberine hydrochloride per serving
-
Chromium picolinate — a well-absorbed form of chromium
-
Black pepper extract (piperine), commonly included in formulations to support the absorption of other compounds
- 60 capsules per bottle — a 30-day supply at two capsules daily
The Authorised Claims for Chromium
Chromium is an essential trace mineral, and it carries two authorised health claims on the GB register. These are the only health claims we are permitted to make for this product:
- Chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism.
- Chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels.
Both claims relate to chromium specifically, not to berberine.
Why the Dose Matters
Berberine has poor oral bioavailability, which is why the published research generally uses gram-level daily intakes rather than the token amounts found in many multi-ingredient "metabolic support" blends. Our formula delivers 1200mg per serving so that the amount on the label is meaningful rather than decorative.
Split dosing is standard practice: one capsule twice daily, taken with food.
Who Should Not Take Berberine
Berberine interacts with several drug-metabolising enzymes, and this genuinely matters. Do not take berberine without speaking to your GP or pharmacist first if you:
- take medication for blood glucose control
- take blood-pressure medication, anticoagulants or ciclosporin
- are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding
- are giving it to anyone under 18
This is not a boilerplate warning. Berberine is a pharmacologically active compound and the interaction potential is real.
