Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid — a plant-derived compound with a distinctive yellow colour, found in barberry, goldthread, Oregon grape and goldenseal. It has centuries of traditional use and has been studied extensively in the modern literature. Most supplements use the hydrochloride salt, chosen because it is stable and can be dosed consistently.
