Magnesium Complex UK
Most magnesium supplements give you one form. Ours gives you five, delivering 400mg of magnesium per serving. This page explains what each form is, why a multi-form approach makes sense, and what magnesium is actually authorised to claim in the UK.

Why Magnesium Deserves More Attention Than It Gets
Magnesium is a cofactor in hundreds of enzymatic reactions. The National Diet and Nutrition Survey has repeatedly shown that a meaningful proportion of UK adults consume less magnesium than the Reference Nutrient Intake, with the shortfall most pronounced among teenage girls, women of reproductive age and older adults.
Of everything we sell, magnesium has the strongest combination of population-level need, authorised health claims, decades of safety data and low cost. It is the least glamorous product in the range and arguably the most useful.
The Nine Authorised Claims for Magnesium
Magnesium carries nine authorised health claims on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register — an unusually strong position for a supplement ingredient:
- Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
- Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function.
- Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system.
- Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function.
- Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
- Magnesium contributes to normal protein synthesis.
- Magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance.
- Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
- Magnesium has a role in the process of cell division.
The Five Forms
| Form |
What it is |
| Glycinate |
Magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. Well absorbed and generally gentle on the stomach. |
| Citrate |
Bound to citric acid. One of the most widely used and best-studied supplemental forms. |
| Malate |
Bound to malic acid, a compound involved in the body's energy pathways. |
| Taurate |
Bound to taurine, an amino acid found naturally in the body. |
| Threonate |
A more recently developed form, bound to threonic acid. |
A note of honesty: the authorised claims above apply to magnesium, not to any particular form. Where forms differ is in absorption characteristics and gastrointestinal tolerance, not in what the mineral does once absorbed. Anyone telling you that one form has unique benefits the others lack is going beyond what the evidence supports.
Complex or Single-Form Glycinate?

Practical Notes
- Magnesium is commonly taken in the evening, though the timing evidence is weaker than the internet suggests
- Excess magnesium from supplements can cause loose stools — if that happens, reduce the dose
- Speak to your GP first if you have reduced kidney function or take medication, as magnesium can interact with several drug classes including certain antibiotics
