One of the most common questions I get about NMN is simple: how much should I actually take? The answer depends on your age, goals, and what the clinical evidence supports. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
What the Clinical Trials Have Used
Human trials on NMN have tested a range of doses. A 2021 study published in Science found that 250mg per day was sufficient to raise blood NAD+ levels and improve muscle function in older men. A more recent 2023 trial tested 300mg, 600mg and 900mg and found dose-dependent increases in NAD+ across all three groups, with the 900mg group showing the highest elevation.
The sweet spot for most adults based on current evidence sits between 250mg and 500mg per day. Higher doses (up to 1,000mg) appear safe in trials but the incremental NAD+ benefit diminishes above 500mg for most people.
Dosage by Goal
General health maintenance and energy support (30s–40s): 250–300mg per day is a reasonable starting point. NAD+ decline begins in your 30s but hasn't dropped dramatically yet, so a moderate dose is sufficient.
Active longevity support (40s–50s): 500mg per day. This is the dose range most longevity researchers reference and what most high-quality supplements are formulated around.
Accelerated restoration (60+): 500–750mg per day. NAD+ levels by this stage may be significantly depleted, justifying a higher dose. Some researchers suggest up to 1,000mg, though the evidence beyond 750mg is less clear in humans.
When to Take NMN
Take NMN in the morning, ideally on an empty stomach or with a light meal. NAD+ plays a role in circadian rhythm regulation, so morning dosing aligns with your body's natural NAD+ production patterns. Several studies have used morning dosing in their protocols.
Should You Cycle NMN?
There is no strong clinical evidence supporting cycling NMN. Some researchers have raised theoretical concerns about long-term high-dose supplementation depleting methyl donors (which is why Trans-Resveratrol and occasionally TMG are stacked with NMN), but for standard doses of 250–500mg, consistent daily use is the current recommendation.
